The woods include a driver and fairway woods, most commonly 3-wood and 5-wood. Women and seniors usually use 7-wood or 9-wood. Woods feature deep metal clubheads, usually made of steel or titanium alloy. They are called "woods" because the clubheads used to be made of wood.

 

1-wood is the longest club, about 45 inches long. It is hard for the beginner to master that length of driver.

 

3-wood is the second-longest club. Fairway woods have smaller heads than drivers, which makes easier to control in the swing than a driver so beginners often use a fairway wood off the tee.
